The Psychological Experience of Hypnosis

By Barrie St John

When somebody is very deeply relaxed in hypnosis it produces a shift not only at a psychological level, but also at a physical and an emotional level. The mind, the brain, the body, the soul, the spirit, the self – whatever you choose to call each of these things, know they work together as a system. If you have a big shift in any of these areas, it will have a knock on effect in another area.

But how do you know if you’re in hypnosis? What kind of things do you experience psychologically?

Well, it’s different for everyone. Generally there are no flashing lights to let you know you are in hypnosis. Your imagination never shouts, “You are now hypnotised!” It’s unlikely that after five or ten minutes you suddenly think ‘Yeah, I’m here now. I can tell.’ It just doesn’t happen like that.

There aren’t always clear dividing lines that let you know when you are actually in hypnosis. We as people want to make sense of everything and want to control everything. It’s just our nature. So people tend to worry about whether they are doing it right, or whether they should be trying this or that, or thinking this or that during hypnosis. But sometimes these thoughts can actually get in the way of the process of self hypnosis. It can become a case of the more conscious effort you make, the less unconscious response you get.

That’s why the message with our self hypnosis CDs and MP3 hypnosis downloads is one of simplicity. Just sit or lay down somewhere safe to relax, use headphones if possible to eliminate outside noise, and then chill out. Let your mind flow and let hypnosis happen naturally. Just listen and feel relaxed with thinking too much about it.

People talk about emotions being mental feelings. Emotions are in fact psychological feelings. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that in hypnosis we can link more and connect deeper with our emotions. Our self hypnosis CDs and MP3 downloads can help someone tap into those feelings. They can use self hypnosis to change behaviours and to motivate themselves to do something – or to not do something. These things occur naturally in hypnosis; it’s all part of that system working in conjunction.

We shouldn’t be trying to concentrate too much in self hypnosis. Falling asleep or dropping off is perfectly fine. What I always suggest is that people just listen to the voice and let it all go. Hypnosis will happen, whether you know it or not.
