Strange Things Are Happening

By Barrie St John

There are many interesting and wonderful experiences that can be brought on by hypnosis. The imagination can create or regress and the body can be calmed and even healed (see our mind body healing hypnosis CD / download).

One of the most common experiences occurs when people imagine and picture things so clearly that it makes them feel as though it is really happening. They might respond and react to what they see because it’s like a real life experience for them, which leads to all sorts of different scenarios. This very strong and powerful phenomenon occurs quite naturally in hypnosis.

Another phenomenon that one might experience in hypnosis is arm catalepsy. In this case, the rigidity of the arm muscles is brought on through suggestion by the hypnotherapist. This physical experience might be used to deepen the state of hypnosis or to prove to a person that they are in fact hypnotised, almost like a convincer.

In cases of pain management hypnosis proves extremely helpful. Hypnotic suggestion can arouse an anaesthesia-like response that might include a partial or full loss of some or all sensation in a particular area of the body or of the skin.

Another experience that can occur in hypnosis is hand levitation. This is when a person’s arm kind of seems to float up into the air. It can feel quite strange when you experience it actually, but it’s nothing magical.

One of the biggest phenomena that people talk about in hypnosis is regression. There are two types of hypnosis regression really. In the first type a person mentally relives the experience, almost as though they were able to go back in time. They think the same thoughts and feel the same feelings as if they are actually there. The other type of regression allows the person to just remember things much more easily. They kind of just watch themselves having the experience, almost like watching a movie.

There is some concern as to how accurate regression in hypnosis really is. Accuracy depends highly on the wording and the language the therapist uses. People can be led into experiences by poor language or through misguided suggestions. To avoid this, therapists should use very clean wording and be careful how they communicate with people in hypnosis.

There are many different kinds of phenomena that people can experience, either spontaneously or with the help of a therapist whilst in hypnosis. While these experiences may feel out of the ordinary, know that none of these happenings are unnatural. The benefits of hypnosis can truly be spectacular and quite rewarding.
