The Brainwave States
Did you realize that for most of your waking hours you’re in the beta state of mind? It’s probably a good thing because Beta is a good place to be when you’re making decisions, reasoning or using logic. In the Beta state your brain waves are above 13 cycles per second and at times may often be much higher.
As brainwaves slow down to between eight and 13 cps you enter the alpha state of mind. The door between your conscious and unconscious mind is open and it becomes easier to access memory and to store new information. We might feel mellow in this relaxed state and we are much more creative and imaginative while in Alpha state of mind. We are also more susceptible to suggestion when we are in the alpha state of mind. When somebody helps you to go into the alpha state of mind you are technically hypnotized.
Below the two conscious states are theta, which is the dream state and delta which is generally deep sleep or total unconsciousness. Whether or not you remember your dreams you must pass through theta on the way to and from Delta. When you go to sleep at night you automatically pass through alpha into sleep, this means that whether you realize it or not, each and every time you go to sleep and wake up, you enter hypnosis.
In fact, psychologists have a name for the state that you go through when going into sleep it’s called the hypnogogic state. They also have a name for the state you enter as you wake up; it’s called the hypnopompic state.
