Finding a Hypnotherapist

Finding the right hypnotherapist is extremely important to a successful hypnosis experience. Of course, the best way to find a hypnotherapist is to get a recommendation. If you have a good friend or colleague that’s been through hypnotherapy and their experience was similar to what you’re looking for, then that’s an ideal situation. The other way is to look in the yellow pages or on the internet, but that’s just a starting point. It’s then up to you to do some investigating.

If the therapist has a web site that’s a great way to check out their qualifications and find out the professional organisations to which they belong. You can then follow up with those organisations and check their criterion for membership and the therapist’s standing within their associations.

Of course, you can always go straight to the source and speak to the hypnotherapist directly. Actually, I think it’s a good idea to speak to them before making an appointment anyway. Be sure to ask if they’re professionally qualified as a hypnotherapist and if they are qualified in any other areas associated with hypnosis, such as counselling. You can then follow up on their responses by researching their certifications and affiliations.

Don’t forget to ask the hypnotherapist where they work. Do they work from home or do they have a professional set up in an office somewhere? In what part of town are they located? If the fees are very cheaper or higher compared to other therapists, why is that? How much experience do they have with hypnosis and how many clients do they see on a regular basis?

You should also speak to them about your situation and see how much experience they have dealing with whatever issues it is you want to resolve. Perhaps you’re looking to stop smoking, or maybe you’re looking for a hypnotherapist to deal with self confidence issues. Whatever the situation, be sure you’re therapist has experience dealing with it.

When you speak to the person on the phone, ask yourself if you would feel comfortable interacting with them while in hypnosis. Do you feel like your personalities will work well together? If the hypnosis will be carried out in their home office, are you okay with that? Does their approach to hypnosis and therapy make sense to you, or are they promising far-fetched miracles?

The things to pay attention to when choosing a hypnotherapist are undoubtedly their professional qualifications and experience, but even more important is to pay attention to your gut reaction to the person. Qualifications have little meaning if you’re unable to relax. Successful hypnosis occurs when that all-important rapport is in place, so take the time to do a little research and find the hypnotherapist best suited for you. It’s certainly worth effort.
