Hypnosis for a Restful Night’s Sleep
Hypnosis is a bridge between being fully awake and asleep, so it’s a natural transition into sleep. You may not realise this, but you enter a natural state of hypnosis every night.
If you’re having trouble falling asleep, you might try to help the process along by intentionally bringing on a hypnotic state.
A really nice way to relax and drift into sleep is to lay in bed and count backwards from ten to one in your mind. With every out breath and descending number you feel your body relaxing deeper. Your muscles respond rather quickly to this activity and often you’ll find yourself falling asleep. It’s a similar process as the one used to enter hypnosis.
Some people prefer to close their eyes, breathe deep, and imagine themselves in their favourite place. Maybe they imagine a place somewhere in the countryside or see themselves surrounded by nature. Any place quiet where you are safe and relaxed will work. Whether it’s a real or imagined place of beauty doesn’t matter; it’s an absolutely beautiful way to drift into sleep.
Some people talk about counting sheep. I’m sure if you count enough you’ll tire your conscious mind and fall asleep without even realising it. I’ve never counted sheep as such, as I prefer to go to a place of peace and beauty in my mind instead. But whatever works for you is fine. Counting sheep most likely works because as your conscious mind is occupied, your body is free to relax and unwind.
Of course, you can always use self-suggestion to bring on sleep. You simply say to yourself as you relax with your eyes closed: I will have a restful night’s sleep. I will wake up at eight o’clock feeling recharged. This works quite effectively and you’ll even notice that your body will naturally awake at the time you’ve specified. The power of our unconscious to do exactly as we intend is quite amazing.
You see, as you lay down at night to go to sleep and you let your mind wander and empty of thought, you are in a natural state of hypnosis. All of your picturing, imagining, and self-talking is being done in hypnosis. Whatever method you choose to fall asleep, know that hypnosis is the bridge that brings you a restful night.
