The Power of the Voice

Whether you are listening to a hypnotist in person or on a recording, some care should be given to the effects of their voice. You want the voice to be soft and mellow. Anything too high pitched or cartoon-like is distracting. You also want them to speak slower. The goal of hypnosis is complete relaxation. High pitched voices or fast-paced speaking may have the opposite effect and leave a person feeling wound up.

Some people say that it is less about the delivery and more about the content, but I am sure it is both. When I am working one to one with people, I do not have any particular introduction or set formula. I just talk to the individual. I drop my voice, my pitch lowers, my speed decreases, and my delivery changes. It’s the same in my hypnosis downloads. I am there with the person, speaking to them in a calm manner to guide them into a deeply relaxed, hypnotic state.

If we were to compare the differences between clinical hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis work, obviously on stage it is presented as a magical, mythical, mysterious thing. Invariably the hypnotist uses an authoritarian method of inducing hypnosis. They command them and tell them what to do. I am not keen on that. I am not sure that it is the right way to deliver a person into a hypnotic state. Of course in the context of the stage it might be appropriate. You could not just sit there with a mellow voice, whispering sweet nothings into people’s ears. It would not have the same entertainment effect. For the purposes of hypnotherapy, however, a soothing voice is preferable.

It is important to me to use great care in making sure not to sound authoritarian or power-loaded. I prefer to make gentle suggestions and avoid strongly worded things. I do accentuate certain words that carry important messages or have particular meaning. It’s called an embedded command. Again, although it’s called an embedded command, this is not to suggest that it can be done in a demanding way. I believe it’s better to use a pause before or after, giving it a bit more emphasis.

A commanding voice is a bit too much like mummy and daddy for many of us, and may ultimately have the opposite effect of what we desire to bring about in self hypnosis. Listening to a person with a calm, soothing voice greatly benefits your reaching a productive hypnotic state.
