When using suggestion in hypnosis, I prefer to always speak in the positive. I think it’s much better when the words paint a picture of what is wanted, not what is unwanted. Take the following sentences for example and you’ll see what I mean. “Every day I feel better and better”. Or, “Every day I don’t feel scared, depressed, sad, and angry”. The latter sounds a bit silly doesn’t it?
In other words, using positive suggestion in hypnosis is about concentrating on what you want. It’s about focusing the hypnosis on what’s good for the person. Think about the many self-help books out there for personal and professional motivation. All of them mention something about positive thinking. It is a fantastic resource to have! Not just for use in hypnosis, but in every aspect of our lives.
There’s always a positive spin on everything. Sometimes it’s hard to find it. We may have to search for it, but it’s there. There’s absolutely no doubt that there’s a positive in everything. If we get in the habit of finding it and filling our lives with more positives then we will be healthier, happier, and achieve more.
If I was to have a problem with anger and I used hypnosis or positive thinking to say to myself, “I’m not going to angry. I’m not an angry person. I would normally get angry about this, but I don’t feel anger anymore,” then I’m not really focusing my energy properly. Every time I use the word anger, I bring up emotions and pictures of myself that relate to anger. It would work much better and be much clearer if I was keeping it in the positive and instead said to myself, “I feel calm and relaxed about this. I’m going to stay chilled out”. This keeps the focus on what you want. When we say, “I’m not going to get angry” well, then we’re keeping the focus on anger. Simply saying, “I’m going to be calm” will help you to accomplish just that.
Whether in hypnosis or in your every day life, keeping your self-talk positive will help you achieve the results you desire. That’s why in all my self hypnosis recordings, I prefer to keep the language positive.
