Sometimes I feel that being a hypnotherapist is the best job in the world. At other times I feel like its hard work and very exhausting. But helping your fellow being can kind of give you a buzz, so I mostly see the work as highly rewarding.
Of course you’re not always popular with your client in a one on one situation. Sometimes if you ask questions or say things that are not easy to talk about, you may find there are times when your client doesn’t really like you. I know this from experience. I went to therapy as part of my training in becoming a therapist and it did help me immensely, although it wasn’t always easy.
But therapy is a learning process. It helps people see new ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Of course, the process of change can be quite challenging. I don’t need to read books or listen to someone else tell me just how people can change because I’ve been there, worn the T-shirt, and come out the other side. I know just how powerful therapy, and in particular, hypnotherapy, can be and how much difference it can make in a person’s life. My personal success now motivates me to do what I do.
Being a therapist does give me certain freedoms in my professional and personal life and I tend to manage my time well. I prefer not to see client’s everyday and usually work with people just a few days each week. Even therapists have to look after themselves you see, because sometimes the emotions of your clients can be quite overwhelming.
If someone keeps talking about how depressed they feel and how bad life is I’ve got to make sure I manage my response to their communication. If you have an entire hour of someone telling you how unhappy they are, it’s not a particularly comfortable experience. It’s the therapist’s job to intervene and change things around a little. To do this I might ask questions, suggest another way of thinking, or ask the client to imagine what it would be like if things were different and what it would take to get there.
Then I make sure to always have a gap in between clients to allow for my own processing of emotions. I make sure I have a half hour or so before I see another person. This limits the number of people to four or five a day, but I think I am in a better place for it, which ultimately benefits the client.
If someone really feels that they would get a buzz out of helping people and enjoy the work, then they should consider becoming a therapist. Being a hypnotherapist is not always a bed of roses; in fact therapy can be a difficult process for both the client and the therapist. But if you’re a caring and compassionate person, as I feel and believe that I am, then helping your fellow being can be a profoundly rewarding experience.
