The Hypnotherapist / Client Relationship
It’s important to point out that the hypnotherapist/client relationship is not a controlling one. At least, it shouldn’t be. Your hypnotherapist is not the boss. Successful hypnosis is definitely a teamwork affair. Its two people working together towards the outcome set forth by the client.
When you work as a team rather than acting as if the hypnotist is doing something to you, you’ll feel empowered. In a teamwork environment you know you are responsible for your part and what you accomplish. Don’t give all the credit to the therapist. They may be guiding your hypnosis, but you’re the one doing the work. Think of them like a driving instructor. They’re certainly helping you but you’re the one driving the car. Your therapist is there to support you and run along beside you, but they’re not there to tell you what to do.
The relationship between a hypnotherapist and a client is a professional one. My clients are not my friends; that’s not what they come to me for. Our relationship has to be reflective of this. It has to be an ethical alliance in that we both know why we are there and what we are there to do. It’s about keeping on track and staying focused on the work to be done in hypnosis.
This is especially important when you have a good rapport with your hypnotherapist; you have to remember to still keep your boundaries in place. When these boundaries get blurred the dynamics of the client/therapist relationship are affected. This can certainly have an impact on your hypnosis and the progress of the work being done.
Hypnosis is more than just being hypnotised; it’s a mutual effort on behalf of the hypnotherapist and the client to work towards the client’s desired goal. The relationship should be built on trust and good communication, while maintaining certain professional and ethical boundaries. With these factors in place, together you and your therapist can embark on successful hypnosis campaign. Always remember that you’re in the driver’s seat. You, too, are responsible for the success of your hypnosis!
